What does it mean?
B1953 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Cinch Overcurrent .
Symptoms
- Gate closes but the last few millimetres are never pulled in, leaving it ajar
- Ajar warning stays on the instrument cluster and interior lamps stay lit
- Cinch motor buzzes, strains or stops abruptly
- Powered close attempts abort and the gate has to be slammed by hand
- Wind noise or water leaks at the rear of the vehicle because the gate is not fully seated
Likely causes
- Latch mechanism binding, dry or seized, especially after winter salt or ice
- Striker out of adjustment or body opening misaligned so the latch has to fight the seal
- Weather seal swollen, iced or replaced with an incorrect part, raising closing effort
- Worn cinch motor with high internal resistance and excessive current draw
- Object, cargo net or luggage trapped in the latch area
- Corroded connector or damaged wiring at the latch giving a high resistance circuit
- Low battery voltage causing the motor to stall and pull extra current
How to fix it
- Clear the code, command a close cycle and watch the latch motor current in live data if the scan tool supports it
- Work the latch by hand with a screwdriver in the pawl to feel for binding, then lubricate and recheck
- Look at the striker for shiny wear marks or an off centre contact pattern, and check the gate gaps against the body
- Inspect the opening for ice, debris, a trapped strap or a swollen seal that adds resistance
- Measure battery voltage at the latch connector while the motor is running, a large drop points at wiring or a bad ground
- Check the latch connector and the boot harness for corrosion and broken wires
- Adjust the striker or renew the latch assembly if it stays stiff, then clear the code and confirm several full cinch cycles
