What does it mean?
B1955 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Release Overcurrent .
Symptoms
- Gate does not release when the button, handle or remote is used
- Latch clicks or buzzes but the gate stays closed
- Powered opening works intermittently, usually worse in cold weather
- Gate has to be opened with the interior emergency release
- The system stops responding after a couple of attempts until the ignition is cycled
Likely causes
- Latch pawl binding or corroded so the release motor stalls
- Mechanical interference from a bent gate, damaged striker or a deformed body opening
- Ice or dirt in the latch preventing the release from travelling fully
- Worn release motor with shorted windings drawing excessive current
- Damaged wiring at the latch, where a chafed feed shorts to ground during motor travel
- Manual latch cable or emergency release adjusted too tight, holding the mechanism under load
- Weak battery or poor ground causing the motor to labour
How to fix it
- Confirm the complaint by commanding a release with a scan tool and listening at the latch
- Operate the latch by hand and check that the pawl moves freely and returns, lubricating and cleaning as required
- Measure supply voltage and voltage drop at the latch connector during a release attempt, comparing it with the battery reading
- Check the release motor current if the tool can display it, or use a low range clamp on the feed wire
- Inspect the emergency release cable adjustment and any accident damage to the gate or striker
- Examine the boot harness for chafe, then repair corroded terminals and poor grounds
- Renew the latch assembly when the mechanism stays stiff or the motor is drawing high current, then verify several release cycles with no code return
