Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Test battery condition and charging voltage first, an unstable supply alone produces communication faults

What does it mean?

B1956 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Rear MICU Lost Communication with Gauge Control Module (A/T Message) .

Symptoms

  • Gear position display missing, frozen or showing dashes on the instrument cluster
  • Functions that depend on the selected gear misbehave, such as reverse triggered lamps or camera
  • Several communication faults stored in different modules at the same time
  • Instrument cluster lights up abnormally or resets while driving
  • Fault comes and goes, often worse after the car has stood or in wet weather

Likely causes

  • Open, shorted or high resistance communication line between the gauge control module and the rear control unit
  • Blown fuse or lost power feed to the gauge control module, so it drops off the network entirely
  • Corroded or partly unlatched connector at either module, often after interior or audio work
  • Poor module ground causing the signal reference to drift and messages to be rejected
  • Weak battery or a charging fault, which makes modules reset while communicating
  • Internal failure of the gauge control module transmitter or the rear control unit receiver
  • Water damage in the rear of the vehicle, a common place for the rear control unit to corrode

How to fix it

  1. Test battery condition and charging voltage first, an unstable supply alone produces communication faults
  2. Scan every module and note which units report lost communication, the common member usually points at the fault
  3. Check the fuses and power feeds for both the gauge control module and the rear control unit
  4. Measure voltage drop on the ground circuits for both modules, they must be close to zero with the system awake
  5. With the ignition off and both modules unplugged, check the communication wire for continuity end to end and for shorts to ground and to battery
  6. Inspect connectors for corrosion, spread pins and moisture, especially at the rear of the vehicle
  7. Repair the wiring or the ground, then reconnect and confirm the message is present again before condemning either module
