What does it mean?

B2583 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Left Rear Tail Marker Lamp Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • Left rear marker or side position lamp does not light
  • Fuse feeding the position lamps blows, taking other small lamps with it
  • Cluster shows a lamp outage warning after the lights are switched on
  • Other position lamps on the same fuse fail at the same moment
  • Fault comes and goes with wet weather
  • Water visible inside the small corner lamp lens

Likely causes

  • Corroded marker lamp socket with the contact resting on the metal shell
  • Water in the rear corner lamp housing after the lens seal or a rubber gasket hardened with age
  • Short lead from the marker lamp chafed against the body panel or a mounting bracket
  • Marker lamp lens cracked or pushed in by a knock, letting spray onto the terminals
  • Marker lamp assembly refitted with the wrong bulb or a bulb forced into the holder
  • Rear harness pinched by trim or damaged in a previous rear body repair
  • Failed lamp output driver in the rear or body control module

How to fix it

  1. Remove the left rear marker lamp assembly and check for water, a hardened seal and a corroded socket
  2. Inspect the socket contacts closely for a pin bent onto the shell and for green oxide
  3. Measure resistance from the marker lamp feed to ground with the lamp unplugged to prove where the short lies
  4. Check the short pigtail behind the lamp for chafing against sheet metal
  5. Verify the correct bulb type is fitted and that it seats without forcing
  6. Repair or replace the socket and pigtail, dry and reseal the housing
  7. Clear the code, switch the position lamps on and confirm the fuse holds and all marker lamps light
