What does it mean?
B2587 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Back Up Lamp Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- Reverse lights do not come on when reverse is selected
- Fuse for the reverse circuit blows, sometimes disabling other reverse-linked functions
- Reverse camera image is very dark at night because the reverse lamps are not illuminating the area
- Parking aid or a trailer detection function may behave oddly if it shares this circuit
- Reverse lights flicker or work for a moment before going out
- Water visible inside the reverse lamp lens
Likely causes
- Water in the reverse lamp housing or socket after a seal or drain has failed
- Corroded socket contact collapsed onto the metal shell
- Rear harness chafed where it crosses the trunk lid, tailgate hinge or a body seam
- Reverse camera, parking sensor or trailer wiring spliced into the back-up lamp wire for a power source
- Incorrect bulb, or a bulb overheating in a socket that has already deformed
- Rear harness crushed during bumper removal or a rear body repair
- Failed output driver in the module that switches the reverse lamps
How to fix it
- Confirm the fuse state and check whether it blows again with the reverse lamps unplugged
- Remove the reverse lamp and inspect the socket and bulb base for water, corrosion and melting
- With the connector separated, measure resistance from the reverse feed to ground on both sides of the connector
- Check any camera, parking sensor or trailer wiring tapped into the reverse feed and remove badly made splices
- Flex the harness through the tailgate or hinge grommet while monitoring the meter for an intermittent short
- Repair the shorted wire, replace the socket, dry the housing and reseal it
- Clear the code, select reverse with the engine running and confirm both lamps light with the fuse intact
