What does it mean?
C1111 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Short to Ground . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS and stability control warning lamps on as soon as the engine starts
- Relay may click continuously or the valve block never energises
- ABS does not intervene during emergency braking
- ABS fuse blows repeatedly
- Traction control and stability functions switched off
- Code sets again immediately after clearing
Likely causes
- Relay control wire chafed against the body, a bracket or a brake pipe
- Water inside the hydraulic unit or relay connector bridging the control pin to ground
- Shorted relay coil pulling the circuit down internally
- Harness pinched or trapped during previous work in the engine bay
- Damaged wiring loom where it passes a sharp edge or a heat source near the exhaust
- Shorted relay driver inside the ABS control module
How to fix it
- Check the ABS fuse and inspect the relay socket for burn marks and melted plastic
- Unplug the ABS module connector and measure resistance from the relay control pin to ground
- If the short disappears with the module unplugged, focus on the wiring, not the module
- Inspect the harness from the fuse box to the modulator for rub-through and trapped sections
- Open and dry the connectors, then clean corrosion between adjacent pins
- Measure the relay coil resistance out of circuit and replace the relay if it is shorted
- Repair the harness or replace the hydraulic unit if the relay is internal, then code and bleed the system
