What does it mean?
C1229 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Failure . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Intermittent ABS and stability lamps that clear on the next key cycle
- Anti lock function dropping out during a drive and returning later
- Low battery voltage recorded in the freeze frame data stored with the fault
- Relay chattering or clicking repeatedly at key-on
- Fault appearing mostly on cold mornings or under heavy electrical load
Likely causes
- High resistance at the relay socket or module connector caused by oxidised terminals
- Relay contacts pitted so the circuit makes and breaks unevenly under load
- Weak battery, dirty battery terminals or a charging fault producing low voltage while the valves operate
- Corroded ABS ground stud giving a rising ground offset as current flows
- Relay coil resistance drifted with age, so pull-in and drop-out times are wrong
- Vibration at a loose connector causing brief interruptions
- Module driver stage becoming marginal when hot
How to fix it
- Test the battery, terminals and charging output before condemning any ABS component
- Perform voltage drop tests on the valve supply feed and the module ground while the system is commanded on
- Inspect and clean relay socket and module connector terminals, and check terminal tension
- Fit a known good relay of the correct part number and monitor whether the code returns
- Watch supply voltage live while tapping and flexing the harness and connectors
- Clean and retorque the ABS ground point and any inline splices
- Repair the poor connection found, clear the code and confirm it stays away over several cold starts
