What does it mean?
C1433 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Steering Angle Sensor Internal Circuit .
Symptoms
- Stability control and traction control switch off with the warning lamps lit
- Steering angle value on live data is frozen, jumps, or does not match the wheel position
- Steering feels normal mechanically but assist may be reduced on electric systems
- Warning returns as soon as the code is cleared, often without driving
- Driver assistance features that need steering angle stop working
Likely causes
- Failed optical or magnetic sensing element inside the sensor
- Moisture reaching the sensor after a windscreen, roof or cowl leak into the steering column
- Dirt, wear debris or a cracked encoder disc inside the sensor housing
- Damaged clock spring assembly, where the sensor is built into or mounted on it
- Unstable supply voltage or a poor ground causing the internal test to fail
- Sensor never initialised after replacement, so it cannot verify its reference position
- Configuration or software mismatch after a control module was replaced
How to fix it
- Turn the steering slowly lock to lock while watching the angle value; look for gaps, jumps or a stuck reading
- Check supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector
- Inspect the column area for water ingress, especially under the windscreen and cowl
- Check for other codes from the column or clock spring circuits
- Attempt the zero point calibration; an internally faulty sensor will refuse to learn
- Verify the correct part number and software configuration if the sensor or module is a replacement
- Replace the sensor or clock spring assembly as designed, then recalibrate the steering angle and road test
