What does it mean?
C1439 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Steering Angle Sensor Initialization Incomplete .
Symptoms
- Stability, traction and ABS warning lamps on after service work or a battery change
- Steering related message in the cluster
- Stability control does not intervene at all
- Displayed steering angle does not match the actual wheel position
- Adaptive headlights, lane assist or park assist inoperative
Likely causes
- Battery disconnected or a control module replaced without performing the calibration afterwards
- Steering rack, column, clock spring or angle sensor replaced and the relearn skipped
- Wheel alignment carried out without resetting the steering angle
- Calibration aborted part way: wheels not straight, vehicle moved, or ignition switched off too early
- Faulty sensor that cannot find its internal reference mark
- Communication dropout during the learning routine
- Incorrect software or configuration in the stability control module
How to fix it
- Park on level ground with the wheels pointing straight and the steering wheel centred
- Run the steering angle zero point calibration with a capable scan tool
- Follow the vehicle specific extra steps where required, such as a short straight drive or a lock to lock sweep
- Confirm the live angle reads close to zero straight ahead and gives similar values at full left and full right
- If learning fails, check sensor supply, ground and network communication
- Verify the alignment and thrust angle; a crooked steering wheel prevents a valid learn
- Replace the sensor or clock spring only if the calibration keeps failing with good circuits
