What does it mean?

C1444 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Steering Phase B Circuit Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • Stability and traction control lamps on, systems inactive
  • Steering angle reading stuck or clearly wrong on live data
  • Reduced or inconsistent electric power steering assist
  • Airbag, horn or steering wheel switch faults present at the same time if the clock spring is damaged
  • Fault present at key on, without needing a road test

Likely causes

  • Chafed phase B wire touching the body or a bracket behind the dash or along the column
  • Damaged clock spring with a conductor rubbed through and grounding out
  • Water in the column or sensor connector bridging the signal to ground
  • Internally shorted sensor channel
  • Pinched or trapped harness after airbag, column or dash work
  • Crushed terminal or a mis-pinned connector after a previous repair
  • Failed module input circuit holding the line low

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the sensor and measure resistance from the phase B pin to ground; a low reading proves a shorted harness
  2. If the wire is clear with the sensor unplugged, the short is inside the sensor
  3. Inspect the harness along the column and behind the dash for chafe points and trapped sections
  4. Check the clock spring for rubbing marks and moisture
  5. Verify sensor supply and ground before condemning the sensor
  6. Repair or reroute the damaged wire, or replace the clock spring or sensor as required
  7. Clear the code, calibrate the steering angle and confirm the value tracks the wheel smoothly
