What does it mean?
P1139 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HO2S Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on, sometimes intermittently over rough roads
- Noticeably higher fuel use and reduced throttle response
- Rough idle that improves and worsens without a clear pattern
- Occasional hesitation or a brief loss of power while driving
- Failed emissions test with the oxygen sensor monitor incomplete
Likely causes
- Sensing element failed with the signal frozen high or low regardless of mixture changes
- Sensor lead melted or burned where it was routed too close to the exhaust or a turbocharger
- Terminal fretting inside the connector after repeated heat cycles, creating an intermittent open
- Rodent damage or crushed harness under the vehicle floor
- Signal circuit shorted to an adjacent wire in the same harness bundle
- Contamination of the element by leaded or heavily additised fuel, sealant or coolant
- Ground offset caused by a corroded chassis ground shared with other sensors
How to fix it
- Check whether the stored code is current or history and note the freeze frame conditions
- Watch the sensor signal while snapping the throttle; a signal that never moves points to the sensor or its circuit
- Trace the sensor lead visually along its whole length looking for melt, chafe and rodent damage
- Back probe the signal and ground at the module connector and repeat the throttle snap test there
- Measure resistance between the signal wire and ground, and between signal and battery positive, with the sensor disconnected
- Clean and repair the shared chassis ground point if voltage drop is excessive
- Fit a correct replacement sensor once the harness checks good, then confirm closed loop control returns
