What does it mean?
P1140 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on with limited engine power or limp mode
- Poor or unpredictable throttle response, sometimes with a delay before the engine reacts
- Unstable idle, hunting or stalling when the throttle is released
- Harsh automatic transmission shifting or shift points changing at random
- Cruise control unavailable
Likely causes
- Worn resistive track or a failed internal element in the throttle or pedal sensor
- Loose sensor mounting or a damaged drive tang no longer following the throttle shaft
- Carbon build-up preventing the throttle plate from reaching its rest or full open position
- Open, shorted or high-resistance signal, reference or ground circuit
- Water or corrosion inside the connector, common on pedal sensors after a leaking windscreen or heater matrix
- Throttle body or pedal replaced without the required adaptation procedure
- Damaged throttle actuator motor or gear train inside an electronic throttle body
How to fix it
- Read all stored codes; several throttle codes together usually point to a common circuit or power supply fault
- Compare commanded and actual throttle position in live data through the whole pedal range
- Check the 5 V reference and ground at the sensor connector with the key on
- Remove the intake ducting and inspect the plate and bore for carbon, then clean carefully if fitted with an electronic body
- Confirm the sensor is securely mounted and the drive tang engages the shaft
- Measure the signal circuit for continuity to the PCM and for shorts to ground or voltage
- After any cleaning or replacement, run the throttle adaptation and verify idle and full travel values
