What does it mean?
P1147 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HO2S-12 (Bank 1 Sensor 2) Rich Shift Monitoring (Bank 1): .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on with a fuel smell from the exhaust
- Poor fuel economy and dark deposits at the tailpipe
- Rough idle, especially after a cold start
- Reduced power and slightly sluggish acceleration
- Sulphur smell if the converter is being overloaded with unburned fuel
Likely causes
- Genuinely rich mixture from leaking injectors or excessive fuel pressure
- Evaporative purge valve stuck open, feeding extra vapour into the intake
- Contaminated rear oxygen sensor biased high after long service
- Failing catalytic converter that can no longer store and release oxygen normally
- Restricted air intake or a badly clogged air filter
- Front sensor reporting incorrectly, causing the controller to add fuel it does not need
- High resistance in the rear sensor ground circuit shifting the measured voltage upward
How to fix it
- Log both front and rear sensor signals together with fuel trims to see whether the mixture is truly rich
- Check fuel pressure against specification and test for a leaking injector or a faulty regulator
- Test purge valve operation with the engine off and watch purge duty in live data
- Inspect the air filter and intake ducting for restriction
- Measure the rear sensor ground circuit voltage drop and check the connector for corrosion
- Assess catalytic converter efficiency by comparing front and rear sensor behaviour at steady cruise
- Replace the rear sensor only after the rich condition and wiring have been ruled out, then verify the monitor completes
