What does it mean?
P1181 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Linear O2 Sensor / Reference Voltage Open Circuit .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on shortly after start
- Mixture control disabled on that bank, engine runs on a fixed fuelling map
- Rough idle, dull throttle response and possible hesitation
- Higher fuel consumption
- Other sensors sharing the same reference may set codes at the same time
- Emissions monitors do not complete
Likely causes
- Broken conductor in the reference wire, often at a flex point or inside a repair splice
- Terminal backed out of the sensor or module connector, or a connector not fully latched
- Corroded, dry pins in the sensor connector after water ingress
- Internal open inside the sensor's reference cell
- Damage from previous exhaust or turbocharger work where the harness was pulled or pinched
- Blown fuse or open supply to the module's sensor reference circuit
- Rarely, a failed reference output inside the control module
How to fix it
- Check whether several sensors sharing that reference have set codes, which points to a common open or a fuse
- With the ignition on, measure the reference voltage at the sensor harness connector
- If the reference is missing, measure it at the module connector to decide whether the fault is in the harness or the module
- Perform a continuity check on the reference wire while wiggling the harness to catch an intermittent break
- Inspect both connectors for pushed-back terminals, corrosion and weak pin tension; retension or replace terminals as needed
- Repair the open circuit, secure the harness, then clear the code
- Replace the sensor if its internal reference circuit measures open with good wiring
