What does it mean?
P1185 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Linear O2 Sensor/Common Ground Wire Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Mixture control disabled, so the engine runs on a fixed fuelling map
- Rough idle, poor throttle response and reduced power
- Increased fuel consumption
- Several oxygen sensor codes may set together because the ground is shared
- Fault often appears or worsens in wet weather
Likely causes
- Harness insulation worn through against the body, engine bracket or exhaust shield
- Moisture and corrosion inside the sensor connector creating a low resistance path to the sensor housing
- Internal short inside the sensor between the ground line and the sensor body
- Harness pinched during previous work on the exhaust, turbocharger or subframe
- Poor previous repair with insufficient insulation at a splice
- Damaged connector seal allowing water into the sensor circuits
- Rarely, a module ground path fault
How to fix it
- Note which codes set together; multiple sensor faults on a shared ground narrow the search to the common wire
- Disconnect the sensor and the module connector, then measure resistance from the common ground wire to chassis; a low reading confirms the short
- Move the harness section by section while watching the measurement to locate the contact point
- Inspect the loom where it crosses brackets, heat shields and the subframe area for worn insulation
- Dry and inspect the connector for water tracking and corrosion, and replace damaged seals
- Repair the damaged section with proper insulation and re-route the harness away from sharp edges
- Replace the sensor if the short is proven inside it, then clear codes and confirm normal operation
