Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Confirm battery condition and charging voltage before any module diagnosis

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 2Powertrain (Other)
  • 11Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1211 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: TCS Control Unit .

Symptoms

  • Traction control lamp permanently on, usually with the ABS lamp
  • Traction control and stability functions completely unavailable
  • Check engine lamp may be on because the engine module lost its partner module
  • Fault sometimes appears only in wet weather or after washing the vehicle
  • No change in engine performance in many cases

Likely causes

  • Internal electronic failure of the traction control unit
  • Supply voltage outside limits from a weak battery or a poor charging system
  • High resistance ground or a loose power feed at the unit
  • Corroded or damp module connector
  • Loss of communication with the ABS or engine module on the data bus
  • Outdated or corrupted control unit software after a previous repair

How to fix it

  1. Confirm battery condition and charging voltage before any module diagnosis
  2. Read codes from all modules to see whether the unit reports itself faulty or another module reports it missing
  3. Unplug, dry and inspect the module connector for corrosion and pushed-back terminals
  4. Voltage drop test both the power feed and the ground of the unit
  5. Check the data bus wiring and connectors for damage
  6. Look for an available software update before ordering hardware
  7. Replace the control unit only after supply, ground, network and wheel speed sensors all test good, then perform the required calibration
