Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read live data and compare requested versus actual boost pressure during a load test to see which way the system is failing

What does it mean?

P1249 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Wastegate Control Valve Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • The MIL is on and the vehicle clearly lacks pulling power
  • Overboost or underboost, sometimes a hard cut when accelerating
  • Whistling or hissing from the engine bay under load
  • Black smoke, higher fuel consumption or a smell of exhaust gas
  • Limp mode with boost held at a fixed low level
  • The fault often appears only at full throttle in the higher gears

Likely causes

  • Wastegate actuator rod seized, out of adjustment or the flap sticking with carbon and rust
  • Split, softened or disconnected vacuum and pressure hose to the actuator
  • Boost control solenoid clogged, sticking or electrically failed
  • Leak in the charge air pipework, intercooler or a loose clamp between turbo and intake
  • Electric wastegate actuator motor or its position feedback out of range on electronically controlled units
  • Chafed wiring or corroded connector on the boost control solenoid circuit
  • Worn turbocharger or a variable geometry mechanism jammed with soot

How to fix it

  1. Read live data and compare requested versus actual boost pressure during a load test to see which way the system is failing
  2. Inspect all charge pipes, clamps and the intercooler for leaks and oil traces before touching the actuator
  3. Check the vacuum or pressure hose to the wastegate actuator for splits, softening and correct routing
  4. Apply vacuum or pressure to the actuator with a hand pump and confirm the rod moves smoothly through its full stroke and returns
  5. Activate the boost control solenoid with the scan tool and listen for it clicking, then measure its winding resistance and check the harness for chafing and corrosion
  6. Check the wastegate flap and the variable geometry mechanism for carbon build-up and free movement
  7. Repair the leak, free or replace the actuator, or renew the boost control solenoid, then road test under load and confirm boost follows the request
