What does it mean?
P1270 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit “A†Conditions .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on and the engine hesitates or stumbles when accelerating
- Rough idle, surging or stalling when coming to a stop
- Noticeable loss of power and slow throttle response
- Higher fuel consumption, sometimes black smoke
- Hard starting, particularly when hot
- Limp mode on some vehicles with the engine running on a default air value
Likely causes
- Contaminated or oiled sensing element after an over-oiled or poorly sealed air filter
- Unmetered air entering through a split intake boot, loose clamp or open breather hose between sensor and throttle
- Open circuit, short or high resistance in the sensor signal, supply or ground wire
- Corroded or damp terminals in the sensor connector
- Restricted air filter or a collapsed intake duct changing the flow pattern
- Exhaust restriction or a leaking intake gasket altering measured flow
- Failed air flow sensor element after long service
How to fix it
- Compare the air flow reading on live data at idle and at raised rpm with the expected value for the engine size
- Inspect the whole intake tract between the sensor and the throttle for splits, loose clamps and disconnected breather hoses
- Check the air filter and housing for dirt, oil residue and a properly seated lid
- Inspect the sensing element for contamination and clean it only with a purpose made cleaner, never by touching the wires
- Measure supply voltage, ground and signal at the sensor connector with the ignition on and while revving
- Check for a restricted exhaust or a leaking intake gasket if the readings stay low with a good sensor
- Replace the air flow sensor if it remains out of range after the intake system has been proven sealed and clean
