What does it mean?
P1276 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 1 Range/Performance .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on, sometimes with a reduced power warning
- Throttle response feels delayed, jerky or inconsistent
- Idle speed sits higher than normal or hunts
- Occasional limp mode with a low rev ceiling
- Cruise control drops out or cannot be set
- The engine may drive normally for a while, then the fault returns
Likely causes
- Worn or dirty resistive track producing a stepped or lazy signal as the pedal moves
- Pedal binding mechanically, a trapped mat or a sticking return spring keeping the signal off its rest value
- High resistance in the signal or ground circuit causing a slow, shifted response
- Terminal corrosion making the signal jump slightly under vibration
- Sensor drifting so its rest and full travel values no longer match the learned window
- Pedal assembly fitted without carrying out the learn procedure
- Bent pedal arm or damage to the pedal box after a previous repair
How to fix it
- Graph the pedal signal on live data while pressing slowly and smoothly through full travel, watching for steps, flat spots or a delayed return
- Confirm the pedal returns fully to rest and moves freely with no mat, clip or trim interference
- Compare the recorded rest and wide open values with specification
- Check the connector for corrosion and pin tension, and voltage drop test the sensor ground
- Back-probe the signal wire and repeat the sweep to see whether the fault is in the wiring or in the sensor
- Wiggle the harness during the sweep to expose an intermittent resistance
- Replace the pedal position sensor assembly if the sweep is faulty at the sensor itself, then run the pedal learn procedure and retest
