Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the freeze frame and note any accompanying misfire or coil codes on Bank 2

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 3Powertrain (Other)
  • 16Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1316 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Spark Plug Detection Module Circuit Fault (Bank 2) .

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on
  • Bank 2 misfire codes stored alongside this one
  • Rough running, hesitation and reduced power
  • Hard starting, particularly when damp
  • Ignition data for that bank unavailable or frozen in the scan tool live list

Likely causes

  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring between the spark detection module and the engine control module on Bank 2
  • Corroded, wet or loose connector at the detection module
  • Missing power feed or ground to the module: blown fuse, failed relay or a corroded ground stud
  • Failed spark plug detection module
  • A genuine ignition fault on Bank 2 producing signals the module cannot interpret, such as a failed coil, a cracked boot or a worn plug
  • Moisture inside the module housing after washing or a water leak

How to fix it

  1. Read the freeze frame and note any accompanying misfire or coil codes on Bank 2
  2. Inspect the detection module connector and the harness running to the engine control module
  3. Measure power and ground at the module with the key on, using a voltage drop test on the ground
  4. Check continuity of the signal lines between the detection module and the engine control module
  5. Inspect Bank 2 coils, boots and spark plugs for arcing, wear and carbon tracking
  6. Repair the harness or replace the detection module once the supply and wiring are proven
  7. Clear the codes and confirm the fault does not return over several drive cycles
