What does it mean?
P1318 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Spark Plug Detection Module Reset Circuit Fault (Bank 2) .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on
- Bank 2 misfire codes appearing together with this one
- Rough idle, hesitation and reduced power
- The code returns quickly after being cleared
- Ignition readiness monitor never completes, which can block an emissions test
Likely causes
- Reset wire between the engine control module and the Bank 2 detection module open or shorted
- Corroded or loose terminals in either connector
- Poor module ground, so the reset pulse is not seen reliably
- Failed detection module that no longer responds to the reset command
- Supply voltage dropping out, from a weak battery, corroded feed or an intermittent fuse holder
- Engine control module output fault, considered last
How to fix it
- Record the freeze frame and note whether the fault sets at start-up or while driving
- Check the reset line for continuity and for shorts to ground and to battery
- Test the module supply and ground under load rather than with a static measurement
- Wiggle-test the harness and connectors while watching the code status on the scan tool
- Inspect both connectors for spread pins, corrosion and moisture, and reseal if needed
- Replace the detection module if the wiring, supply and ground all check good
- After the repair, verify the ignition monitor completes and the code stays away
