What does it mean?
P1317 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Spark Plug Detection Module Circuit Fault (Bank 1) .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on
- Misfire codes for Bank 1 cylinders stored at the same time
- Rough idle, hesitation and reduced power under load
- Long cranking before start-up
- Ignition monitor never completing readiness
Likely causes
- Wiring between the Bank 1 spark detection module and the engine control module open, shorted or corroded
- Loose, wet or damaged connector at the detection module
- No supply voltage or a poor ground at the module
- Failed detection module
- Ignition fault on a Bank 1 cylinder, such as a coil breaking down or a plug with an excessive gap, confusing the monitor
- Water ingress or physical damage to the module after work in that area
How to fix it
- Record the freeze frame and check for related Bank 1 misfire and coil codes
- Inspect the module connector and its harness for corrosion, chafing and pin push-out
- Verify battery voltage at the module and test its ground with a voltage drop measurement
- Check the signal lines between the detection module and the engine control module for continuity and shorts
- Inspect the Bank 1 coils, boots and spark plugs, replacing anything obviously worn or carbon tracked
- Replace the detection module only after wiring, supply and ground have been proven
- Clear codes, drive the vehicle and confirm the ignition monitor completes
