Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check oil level, condition and service history first, oil quality drives most cam timing faults

What does it mean?

P1380 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Variable Cam Timing Solenoid 'A' Circuit Condition .

Symptoms

  • MIL on, sometimes with cam timing performance codes
  • Rough idle, most noticeable on a cold start
  • Loss of low end torque or a flat feeling at higher engine speed
  • Ticking or rattling noise from the front of the engine
  • Hesitation during acceleration and higher fuel consumption

Likely causes

  • Open circuit or short in the solenoid control wiring
  • Failed solenoid coil with an open or shorted winding
  • Clogged solenoid filter screen or sludge restricting oil flow to the actuator
  • Corroded or loose connector at the solenoid
  • Low engine oil level, degraded oil or the wrong viscosity
  • Weak control module driver output for that solenoid
  • Harness chafed or heat damaged where it runs across the valve cover

How to fix it

  1. Check oil level, condition and service history first, oil quality drives most cam timing faults
  2. Command the solenoid on and off with a scan tool and listen or feel for the click
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it with specification
  4. Check for battery voltage on the feed and a switching ground from the module at the connector
  5. Remove the solenoid, clean its filter screen and look for varnish and metal debris
  6. Inspect the harness across the valve cover for oil soaking and heat damage
  7. Replace the solenoid if it fails electrically or hydraulically, then confirm cam angle response in live data
