Crankshaft Position (CKP)/Ignition Coil - Cylinder 4 - Early Activation Fault

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the knock sensor activity in live data and compare Bank 1 against the other bank

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 3Powertrain (Other)
  • 82Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1382 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Self-Test, Knock Control Test Pulse (Bank 1) .

Symptoms

  • MIL on with the code stored
  • Ignition timing pulled back defensively: sluggish acceleration and flat power
  • Slightly higher fuel consumption
  • Audible pinging under load may go uncorrected
  • Engine feels weak when climbing or towing while idle quality stays normal

Likely causes

  • Open circuit or short to ground in the Bank 1 knock sensor signal wire
  • Knock sensor mounting bolt loose or torqued incorrectly so vibration is not transmitted
  • Corroded or coolant contaminated sensor connector, often located under the intake manifold
  • Damaged shielded cable or a broken shield ground allowing electrical noise
  • Knock sensor with a cracked internal piezo element
  • Excessive mechanical engine noise masking the test pulse
  • Faulty knock processing circuit inside the control module

How to fix it

  1. Read the knock sensor activity in live data and compare Bank 1 against the other bank
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and pigtail, heat and coolant leaks destroy them regularly
  3. Measure sensor resistance and check for a short to ground
  4. Verify the mounting bolt torque and that the seating surface is clean and flat
  5. Tap lightly on the block near the sensor with the key on and watch the signal respond
  6. Repair the wiring or replace the knock sensor, then re-run the module self test
  7. Consider the control module only after wiring and sensor are proven good
