Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Remove and read the spark plugs, check gap, electrode wear and colour

What does it mean?

P1383 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Secondary Ignition Circuit Range Check Voltage Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • MIL on, often together with misfire codes
  • Rough idle and misfire under load or in wet weather
  • Hesitation and reduced power when accelerating
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Hard starting in damp conditions and an occasional exhaust pop

Likely causes

  • Worn spark plugs with an excessive gap raising the required firing voltage
  • Cracked or carbon tracked coil boots and damaged plug leads
  • Ignition coil with weak secondary output
  • Moisture or carbon tracking on the coil tower or distributor cap where fitted
  • Poor coil ground or low supply voltage at the coil
  • Very lean mixture or low compression raising firing voltage on one cylinder
  • Faulty ignition module or measuring circuit

How to fix it

  1. Remove and read the spark plugs, check gap, electrode wear and colour
  2. Inspect coil boots and plug leads for cracks, carbon tracks and burn marks
  3. In the dark, mist a little water around the coils and look for arcing
  4. Measure plug lead resistance where leads are used
  5. Check coil supply voltage and ground quality with a multimeter
  6. Scope the secondary pattern and compare firing and burn voltages between cylinders
  7. Replace the worn secondary components, then run a compression test if firing voltage stays high
