Fuel Tank Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Fault

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Unplug the valve and check the control wire with the ignition on: continuous battery voltage confirms a short to power

What does it mean?

P1410 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Tank Ventilation Valve Circuit Short to B+: .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Unstable idle, stumbling or stalling especially at hot idle
  • Fuel odour and difficulty starting after refuelling
  • Purge valve buzzing continuously or staying open
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Emissions test failure

Likely causes

  • Purge valve control wire shorted to battery positive
  • Chafed harness touching a power feed or a damaged loom section
  • Internally shorted purge valve solenoid bridging supply and control
  • Moisture and corrosion in the connector bridging the terminals
  • Incorrect wiring from a previous repair or an accessory installation
  • Control module output driver stuck in the on state
  • Damaged fuse box terminal feeding the circuit

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the valve and check the control wire with the ignition on: continuous battery voltage confirms a short to power
  2. Measure valve resistance and check the insulation between the winding and its supply terminal
  3. Follow the harness from the valve to the module looking for chafe points and melted insulation
  4. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion and pushed-in terminals
  5. Repair the shorted section and protect the harness with proper loom and routing
  6. Replace the valve if it is internally shorted
  7. Re-run the evaporative system test and confirm the purge valve holds vacuum when it is commanded closed
