What does it mean?
P1414 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Secondary Air Injector Pump Relay Control Circuit Signal High .
Symptoms
- MIL on and the secondary air monitor never completes
- The air pump stays silent during cold start when it should run for a short period
- Elevated hydrocarbon emissions and a noticeable exhaust smell in the first minutes
- Slightly unstable cold idle
- No pump activity when commanded with a scan tool
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the wire between the PCM and the relay coil
- Relay removed, seated loosely, or with an internally open coil
- Corroded or backed out terminals in the relay socket
- Loss of the ignition feed that supplies the relay coil, such as a blown fuse
- High resistance splice or a repaired joint that has failed in the air injection harness
- Control wire shorted to a battery positive circuit running alongside it
- PCM output stage failure, only after wiring is verified
How to fix it
- Confirm the relay is fully seated and pull it to inspect socket terminals for spreading and corrosion
- Measure relay coil resistance; an open coil reads infinite and explains the high voltage report
- With the relay out and the key on, check that the coil supply terminal has battery voltage
- Backprobe the PCM control wire and command the relay with a scan tool; the voltage should drop close to zero when energised
- Perform a continuity test on the control wire from the relay socket to the PCM pin
- Check for battery voltage on the control wire with the PCM disconnected, which would reveal a short to power
- Repair the open or shorted wire, replace the relay if its coil is open, then verify pump run time on a cold start
