What does it mean?
P1415 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Secondary Air Injection System (Bank 1) Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on with the secondary air readiness monitor incomplete
- Pump audible but no change in exhaust behaviour during cold start
- Rough idle or hesitation in the first minute after a cold start
- Higher hydrocarbon emissions and possible test failure
- In some cases a hissing or blowing noise near the air injection plumbing
Likely causes
- Carbon blocked air injection passages in the Bank 1 cylinder head or exhaust manifold
- Seized or leaking air check valve on Bank 1, letting exhaust gas back into the pump
- Weak air pump output caused by a clogged intake filter or worn pump
- Split, collapsed or disconnected air delivery hose on the Bank 1 side
- Vacuum or electrical control fault at the shut off valve so it never opens fully
- Water damaged pump after the check valve allowed condensate back through
- Upstream oxygen sensor on Bank 1 not seeing the expected lean shift, sometimes due to sensor ageing
How to fix it
- Start the engine cold with a scan tool connected and watch the Bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor for the expected lean shift while the pump runs
- Listen and feel for pump operation, then check that air actually reaches the exhaust side
- Remove the check valve and inspect for carbon, sticking and burnt seat surfaces
- Probe the air injection passages in the head or manifold for carbon blockage and clean them where possible
- Inspect all hoses for splitting, heat damage and loose clamps, and verify the pump inlet filter is not clogged
- Test the shut off valve control, whether vacuum operated or electric, with the pump commanded on
- Replace the failed pump, valve or hose, then repeat a cold start monitor run to confirm the code does not return
