What does it mean?
P1542 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HTRS Passenger Heater Standby Circuit High Input .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with the auxiliary heater unavailable
- Heater will not start from the timer, the remote or the cabin control
- Cabin warms up slowly on cold mornings
- Heater status shown as not ready in the vehicle information display
- Additional heater unit codes stored alongside this one
- Engine driveability unaffected
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the standby signal wire or a broken crimp in the connector
- Terminal pushed back out of the heater connector after previous work
- Short from the standby wire to a supply voltage
- Corrosion creating high resistance in the circuit after water ingress
- Auxiliary heater unit disconnected or internally failed, so it never pulls the line down
- Poor ground for the heater unit, which raises the measured voltage
- Receiving module input circuit failure as the last suspect
How to fix it
- Check that the heater connector is properly latched and the terminals are fully seated
- Measure the standby circuit voltage at the heater connector and again at the receiving module
- Check the wire for continuity between the two ends and for a short to a supply line
- Inspect both connectors for corrosion, moisture and pushed-back terminals
- Carry out a voltage drop test on the heater ground
- Repair the harness or connector and clear the code
- Replace the auxiliary heater control unit only after the wiring has been proven good, then test the heater with a scan tool activation
