What does it mean?
P1546 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Boost Pressure Control Valve Short to B+ .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with the engine in limp mode
- Boost either far too high, causing an overboost cut, or no boost at all
- Heavy loss of power on hills and when overtaking
- Black smoke or hesitation under load on diesel engines
- Turbo whistle without a matching increase in pull
- Engine may recover after a restart and then fail again under load
Likely causes
- Control wire shorted to a positive feed where the insulation has melted near the turbocharger heat
- Corrosion inside the boost control solenoid connector bridging the supply and control pins
- Internal short between the solenoid winding and its supply side
- Harness routed against hot exhaust components without its heat shielding
- Incorrect wiring or a poor repair after turbo, manifold or intercooler work
- Module driver that can no longer pull the output low
How to fix it
- Unplug the solenoid, switch the ignition on with no command and measure the control pin to ground; battery voltage confirms a short to positive
- Unplug the module connector as well to establish whether the module or the harness is the source
- Inspect the harness around the turbocharger and exhaust for melted or hardened insulation
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance and check for leakage to its body
- Check the connector for green corrosion and pin-to-pin leakage
- Repair the harness with heat-resistant protection and correct routing
- Replace the boost pressure control valve if it is internally shorted, then verify actual against requested boost in live data
