What does it mean?
P1548 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Boost Pressure Control Valve Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with the fault and freeze frame data stored
- Clear loss of turbo boost, flat and lazy acceleration under load
- Engine drops into limp mode with reduced rpm and boost limits
- Either no boost at all or an overboost complaint, depending on the position the wastegate is stuck in
- Black smoke from the exhaust on diesel engines during hard acceleration
- Higher fuel consumption and poor drivability on hills or when towing
Likely causes
- Corroded, loose or water-intruded connector at the boost pressure control solenoid
- Broken or chafed wire between the PCM (powertrain control module) and the solenoid, typically where the harness runs past the turbocharger heat shield
- Open winding inside the solenoid after long-term exposure to exhaust heat
- Missing ignition-side supply voltage at the solenoid because of a blown fuse or a failed relay
- Spread, pushed-back or oxidised terminals in the PCM connector
- Failed solenoid driver stage inside the PCM, which is the least likely cause and should be checked last
How to fix it
- Read all stored codes and record the freeze frame data before clearing anything
- Inspect the solenoid connector and the harness around the turbocharger for melted insulation, chafing and green corrosion
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it with specification; an infinite reading confirms an open coil
- With the ignition on, check for battery voltage on the supply side of the solenoid and continuity on the control side back to the PCM
- Wiggle-test the harness while watching a meter or live data to expose an intermittent open
- Repair the damaged wire or connector first, and replace the solenoid only when it is proven to be open
- Clear the code, road test under load and confirm that commanded and actual boost follow each other
