Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Record the freeze frame data and note whether the fault is current or intermittent

  • 63Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1863 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: TCC Solenoid Circuit Short to Voltage .

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on with a stored torque converter clutch code
  • Torque converter clutch never applies, so engine rpm stays high at steady highway speed
  • Noticeably higher fuel consumption and more engine noise while cruising
  • Transmission may fall back to a default strategy and hold a single gear
  • Transmission fluid runs hot; a burnt smell can develop after long trips
  • Overdrive may be locked out on some vehicles

Likely causes

  • Chafed TCC control wire touching a powered wire or a sharp metal edge in the transmission harness
  • Fluid or water intrusion at the transmission case pass-through connector bridging the control pin to a powered pin
  • Internally shorted TCC solenoid winding feeding voltage back onto the control line
  • Pushed-back, spread or corroded terminal in the case connector allowing pin-to-pin contact
  • Damaged internal wiring harness rubbing against the valve body or case
  • Aftermarket or previously repaired wiring spliced into the transmission circuits
  • Failed low-side driver inside the TCM/PCM (Transmission/Powertrain Control Module)

How to fix it

  1. Record the freeze frame data and note whether the fault is current or intermittent
  2. Open the transmission case connector and inspect for fluid, corrosion and pushed-back terminals
  3. Unplug the solenoid and measure its winding resistance, then its resistance to case ground
  4. With the solenoid disconnected and the key on, check the control wire for battery voltage — voltage present points to a harness short or a stuck module driver
  5. Wiggle-test the harness along the transmission and frame rail while watching live data
  6. Repair the shorted harness section or renew the internal wiring/solenoid assembly
  7. Replace the control module only after harness and solenoid have both tested good
