Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check fluid level and condition first — dark, burnt fluid changes the whole diagnosis

What does it mean?

P1865 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T 4-5 Shift Solenoid Circuit Malfunction (5L40-E) Code .

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on, often with additional shift or ratio codes
  • Transmission will not shift into the top gear, so rpm stays high on the highway
  • Harsh or delayed 4-5 shift, sometimes a flare between gears
  • Default (limp) operation holding one gear until the ignition is cycled
  • Fuel consumption rises because the top ratio is unavailable
  • Occasional shift busyness or hunting at light throttle

Likely causes

  • Open or short in the 4-5 shift solenoid control circuit inside or outside the transmission
  • Failed shift solenoid — open winding, shorted coil or a plunger stuck by varnish
  • Contaminated or degraded transmission fluid holding the solenoid valve
  • Oil or corrosion in the transmission case pass-through connector
  • Chafed internal harness rubbing on the valve body or case
  • Low fluid level causing erratic solenoid operation and pressure loss
  • Faulty solenoid driver inside the TCM/PCM

How to fix it

  1. Check fluid level and condition first — dark, burnt fluid changes the whole diagnosis
  2. Compare commanded gear with actual gear ratio in live data during a road test
  3. Inspect the case pass-through connector for fluid, corrosion and loose terminals
  4. Measure the shift solenoid resistance at the case connector and compare to specification
  5. Command the solenoid with a bidirectional tool and confirm it clicks and changes pressure
  6. Drop the pan and check the filter and magnet for clutch material or metal debris
  7. Replace the shift solenoid or the solenoid pack, refill correctly, and verify with a road test
