Transmission Automatic 4-Wheel Drive Indicator (Lamp) Circuit Failure

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read all stored codes in every module and note which ones set together

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 8Powertrain (Other)
  • 68Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1868 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: High side 2 system (Short to power supply) .

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on, usually with several related codes set at the same time
  • Every component fed by that output stops working together
  • Reduced engine or transmission performance, often with a default (limp) strategy
  • Warning messages on the dash appear as a group rather than one at a time
  • Rough running, stalling or a no-start condition depending on which components share the supply
  • The fault can be intermittent and follow bumps or wet weather

Likely causes

  • Chafed harness letting the high-side output touch a permanently powered wire
  • Water or salt contamination inside a connector bridging the output pin to a battery-feed pin
  • Internally shorted actuator, solenoid or sensor supplied by that output
  • Aftermarket accessory or a previous repair spliced onto the same circuit
  • Damaged or pushed-in terminal causing pin-to-pin contact in a module connector
  • Failed high-side driver stage inside the control module

How to fix it

  1. Read all stored codes in every module and note which ones set together
  2. Use the wiring diagram to list every component fed by the high-side 2 output
  3. Measure the output voltage with the key on and compare it to the module command
  4. Disconnect the supplied components one at a time to see which one makes the fault clear
  5. Inspect shared connectors for water, corrosion and green terminals; dry and repair as needed
  6. Follow the harness along brackets and edges looking for chafe points and repair them
  7. Replace the shorted component; only replace the module once the harness and loads are proven good
