First step

Approach this as an oil pressure and mechanical response fault.

  • 4Ignition / Misfire
  • 42Sequence number

What does it mean?

P3442 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 6 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) normally lights only after the engine is thoroughly warmed up
  • Shudder, jolt or stumble as the engine moves between full and reduced-cylinder operation
  • Rough idle with an intermittent cylinder 6 misfire
  • Valve train noise that rises and falls with load and oil temperature
  • Fuel economy worsens once the system disables itself
  • The complaint often tracks the oil service interval, easing after a change and returning later

Likely causes

  • Low oil level or oil well past its service life, leaving the actuator without stable pressure
  • Oil viscosity outside the specified grade, which slows the switching action
  • Restricted oil passage, blocked filter screen or sludge inside the oil control valve
  • Sticking or worn switching lifter / roller finger follower on cylinder 6
  • Solenoid spool moving slowly because of varnish, even with a healthy coil
  • Oil pressure below specification from a worn pump, faulty pressure control solenoid or excessive clearances
  • Valve train and chain wear that shifts the mechanical response the module measures

How to fix it

  1. Check the oil level, oil condition and service history and confirm the specified viscosity
  2. Study freeze frame data for the oil temperature and load at which the code set
  3. Command the solenoid on and off with a scan tool and watch for any change in idle quality or live data
  4. Measure actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot, at idle and at raised rpm
  5. Remove the solenoid and inspect the screen and bore for varnish, sludge and metal particles; clean or replace
  6. If the hydraulic side is sound, inspect the cylinder 6 switching lifter and rocker assembly
  7. Change the oil and filter after the repair and confirm over several drive cycles that the code does not return
