What does it mean?
P3446 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 6 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) usually lights only after full warm-up
- Rough running or shudder while the system tries to change valve modes
- Intermittent cylinder 6 misfire that varies with oil temperature
- Load-dependent ticking or clatter from the cylinder head
- Loss of high rpm power and worse fuel economy
- The complaint often improves briefly after fresh oil, then returns
Likely causes
- Low, dirty or overdue engine oil, leaving the actuator short of clean pressure
- Wrong oil viscosity for the engine, slowing the switching response
- Restricted feed passage, clogged screen or sludge in the oil control valve bore
- Sticking or worn switching component in the cylinder 6 exhaust valve train
- Solenoid spool sticking from varnish deposits despite a correct coil resistance
- Oil pressure below specification from a worn pump or a faulty pressure control solenoid
- Chain or valve train wear that moves the mechanical response outside the expected window
How to fix it
- Check oil level and condition and confirm the correct grade was used at the last service
- Read the freeze frame for oil temperature, rpm and load when the code set
- Command the solenoid with a scan tool and look for any change in engine behaviour or live data
- Measure oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot, at idle and above idle
- Remove the solenoid and inspect its screen and bore for varnish, sludge and metal debris; clean or renew
- If the hydraulic circuit is good, examine the cylinder 6 exhaust switching lifter and rocker hardware for wear
- Complete an oil and filter change, then verify over several warm-up cycles that the code does not return
