What does it mean?

P3450 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 7 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) usually lights only after the engine is fully warm
  • Jolt, shudder or stumble as the engine changes between full and reduced-cylinder operation
  • Rough idle with an intermittent cylinder 7 misfire
  • Valve train ticking that varies with load and oil temperature
  • Fuel economy drops once the system disables itself
  • Fault often eases after an oil change and returns as the oil ages

Likely causes

  • Low oil level or oil past its service life, so the actuator loses stable pressure
  • Oil viscosity outside the specified grade, the most common reason for slow switching
  • Restricted oil passage, blocked screen or sludge inside the oil control valve
  • Sticking or worn switching lifter / roller finger follower on cylinder 7
  • Solenoid spool moving sluggishly from varnish despite a healthy coil
  • Oil pressure below specification from a worn pump, faulty pressure control solenoid or excessive clearance
  • Valve train and chain wear altering the mechanical response the module measures

How to fix it

  1. Check oil level, oil condition and the last service interval and confirm the specified viscosity
  2. Read freeze frame for the oil temperature, rpm and load when the code set
  3. Command the solenoid on and off with a scan tool and watch for any change in idle quality and live data
  4. Measure real oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot, at idle and at raised rpm
  5. Remove the solenoid and inspect its screen and bore for varnish, sludge and metal particles; clean or replace
  6. If the hydraulic side checks out, inspect the cylinder 7 switching lifter and rocker for wear or sticking
  7. Change oil and filter after the repair and confirm over several warm-up cycles that the code does not return
