What does it mean?
P3451 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 7 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on and frequently returning right after a clear
- Cylinder deactivation locked out, so fuel consumption rises
- Rough idle and vibration that worsens when the system tries to switch modes
- Ticking or knocking from the top of the engine
- Cylinder 7 misfire, most obvious at low rpm
- Reduced power or limp mode on some vehicles
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed through and grounding on the cylinder head, a bracket or a loom clip
- Solenoid winding shorted internally to its own case
- Oil or coolant in the connector bridging the control pin to ground
- Harness pinched under a cover, manifold or bracket following earlier engine work
- PCM (powertrain control module) output driver shorted on, holding the circuit low
- Poor splice or added wiring in this circuit that has grounded out
How to fix it
- Confirm which physical solenoid serves cylinder 7 on this engine before testing
- Check for other low-circuit codes on the same bank, which point to shared harness damage
- Unplug the cylinder 7 solenoid and see whether the code changes to an open circuit fault
- With solenoid and module both disconnected, measure resistance from the control wire to engine ground
- Inspect the harness where it crosses metal edges, clips and brackets for rub-through and crush marks
- Compare the coil resistance with a known-good solenoid on the same engine
- Repair or reroute the damaged harness, or replace a shorted solenoid, then verify with output commands and a road test
