SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Air Conditioning Clutch

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Confirm the complaint by commanding the A/C clutch with the scan tool and watching whether it engages

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 20Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1020 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .

Symptoms

  • Air conditioning does not cool, and the compressor clutch never engages
  • Idle speed does not rise as it should when the A/C is switched on
  • A/C switch light flashes or the climate display shows an error
  • Cooling fans behave abnormally, running constantly or not at all
  • Other communication codes stored alongside this one
  • Fault may come and go, with the A/C working intermittently

Likely causes

  • Fault or power loss in the module that broadcasts the A/C clutch request, typically the climate control module
  • Open circuit or high resistance in the serial data line between the climate module and the engine controller
  • Corroded or loose connector at the climate control module behind the dash
  • Short to ground or to battery voltage on the data circuit, corrupting the message
  • Refrigerant pressure switch or A/C control fault preventing a valid clutch request from being built
  • Module software or configuration mismatch after a climate or engine module was replaced
  • Poor ground shared by the climate module, distorting the transmitted signal

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the complaint by commanding the A/C clutch with the scan tool and watching whether it engages
  2. Read codes from both the climate control module and the engine controller, and note which side reports the missing message
  3. Check refrigerant pressure and the pressure switch, since a low charge stops a valid clutch request being sent
  4. Inspect and reseat the climate control module connector, checking pins for corrosion and push-back
  5. Test the serial data circuit between the modules for continuity, shorts to ground and shorts to battery voltage
  6. Do voltage drop tests on the climate module power and ground circuits
  7. Verify both modules have the correct software and configuration for the vehicle
  8. Replace the climate control module only after wiring, refrigerant charge and supply have been proven correct
