SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Air Conditioning Clutch

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Monitor A/C pressure and requested clutch status in live data and look for values that jump or freeze

  • 0Network / Communication
  • 21Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1021 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .

Symptoms

  • Air conditioning cuts in and out, or refuses to engage at all
  • Idle quality changes unexpectedly as the controller reacts to inconsistent clutch status
  • Cooling fan operation does not match the actual cooling demand
  • Climate display shows an error message or reverts to a default setting
  • Fault clears and returns without any pattern
  • Other data circuit codes stored in the same module group

Likely causes

  • Intermittent corruption of the data line caused by chafed insulation or a partly broken conductor
  • Water or corrosion in a connector on the serial data circuit, distorting the signal
  • Climate control module producing a faulty or out-of-range message
  • A/C pressure sensor reading out of range, so the clutch status message contains impossible values
  • Electrical interference from an added accessory spliced into the data circuit
  • Configuration mismatch between modules, so the message is decoded incorrectly
  • Weak supply voltage causing a module to transmit incomplete data frames

How to fix it

  1. Monitor A/C pressure and requested clutch status in live data and look for values that jump or freeze
  2. Check refrigerant charge and the A/C pressure sensor reading against ambient conditions
  3. Inspect the serial data wiring between the climate module and the engine controller for chafing, tight bends and past repairs
  4. Wiggle test the harness and connectors while watching live data to catch intermittent corruption
  5. Clean and reseat all connectors in the circuit, drying any that show moisture
  6. Remove accessories that have been spliced into the data circuit and retest
  7. Verify module configuration and software levels, correcting any mismatch
  8. Replace the transmitting module only when wiring, sensors and supply voltage have all been proven good
