What does it mean?
U1022 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication with Brake ECU .
Symptoms
- ABS, stability control and brake warning lamps illuminated together
- ABS, traction and stability functions completely unavailable
- Longer stopping distances during hard braking because ABS does not intervene
- Speedometer inaccurate or dead if wheel speed data is shared through this module
- Cruise control, hill hold and parking brake functions disabled
- Scan tool cannot connect to the brake control unit while other modules respond
Likely causes
- Blown fuse or failed relay feeding the brake ECU
- Corroded or water damaged brake ECU connector, which is exposed to road spray in many installations
- Open circuit or intermittent connection in the bus wiring to the brake ECU
- Poor ground at the brake ECU mounting point, often a corroded stud
- Internal failure of the brake ECU or its bus transceiver
- Low system voltage or a failing battery causing the module to drop offline
- Harness damage from suspension movement or a previous repair near the brake unit
How to fix it
- Attempt to communicate with the brake ECU using a scan tool and note which other modules respond
- Check the fuses and relays supplying the brake ECU before any wiring test
- Measure the power feeds and ground at the brake ECU with the ignition on and do voltage drop tests
- Clean and retorque the brake ECU ground point, which is a very common cause of lost communication
- Inspect the connector for water ingress, corrosion and damaged seals, and dry it thoroughly
- Check both bus lines for continuity, shorts to ground and shorts to battery voltage between the brake ECU and the gateway
- Wiggle test the harness near the suspension and along the wheel arch route while watching for dropouts
- Replace the brake ECU only after supply, ground and network wiring have been fully verified
