SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Primary Id

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Connect to the instrument cluster module directly with a scan tool and read its own stored codes; this code exists to send you there

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 24Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1024 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control module for instrument panel insert please read DTC .

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp or a general system message on the instrument panel
  • One or more gauges reading incorrectly, sticking or not moving at all
  • Segments missing from the display, or the display flickering
  • Trip computer, service interval or fuel range data missing or wrong
  • Warning lamps that stay on or fail to complete the bulb check at ignition on
  • Other modules storing communication codes that involve the cluster

Likely causes

  • One or more faults stored inside the instrument cluster that have not been read or cleared
  • Cluster losing or receiving corrupted data from another module, which it then logs internally
  • Low system voltage or a poor cluster ground causing internal errors to be recorded
  • Corroded or loose cluster connector behind the dash panel
  • Cluster software or coding not matching the vehicle after a repair or replacement
  • Damaged bus wiring between the cluster and the gateway
  • Internal cluster fault such as a failed gauge driver, display or stepper motor

How to fix it

  1. Connect to the instrument cluster module directly with a scan tool and read its own stored codes; this code exists to send you there
  2. Write down and prioritise the cluster's internal codes, then diagnose those faults individually
  3. Test battery condition and charging voltage, as low voltage sets a wide range of cluster faults
  4. Inspect and reseat the cluster connectors, checking pins for corrosion, spread and push-back
  5. Do voltage drop tests on the cluster power feeds and grounds
  6. Check the bus wiring between the cluster and the gateway for damage or a poor previous repair
  7. Verify the cluster coding and software match the vehicle, particularly if it was replaced
  8. Clear all codes after repairs, then run a full drive cycle and recheck which faults return
