Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

A short to ground is proven with a meter, not by inspection alone.

What does it mean?

U2016 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Main Software System Internal Failure .

Symptoms

  • Several modules unreachable or dropping off the scan tool
  • Multiple warning lamps illuminated together
  • Functions are dead rather than intermittent, because the line is held low
  • Vehicle may go into limp mode
  • A fuse on the affected circuit blows repeatedly
  • Codes set again immediately after clearing

Likely causes

  • Signal link wire shorted to ground where it rubs against a bracket, a body edge or a hot engine part
  • Water in a connector providing a leakage path to ground
  • Crushed harness after a repair, an accessory fitment or under a seat rail
  • Corroded terminal touching the module housing or a nearby ground point
  • A module with an internal fault pulling the line low
  • Corrupted internal software in the control module after an interrupted update or a low-voltage event
  • Rodent damage to the loom

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and measure resistance from the signal line to ground; a reading near zero confirms the short
  2. Unplug modules one at a time to see whether one of them is pulling the line down
  3. Follow the harness route and look for rub-through points, crushed sections and rodent damage
  4. Check every connector on the circuit for water and corrosion
  5. Repair the damaged section and protect it with proper loom and sealed joints
  6. If the wiring tests clean, check the module software level and reflash it correctly with a stable supply voltage
  7. Replace the module as the final step, then configure it to the vehicle
