What does it mean?

U2017 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Driver-side Side Air Bag Sensor System Communication Error .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp permanently on
  • Driver-side airbag and curtain disabled
  • Belt pretensioners may also be inhibited
  • Warning message about the restraint system on the display
  • The fault returns immediately after clearing
  • Vehicle fails inspection while the airbag lamp is lit

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at the driver-side impact sensor in the door or B-pillar
  • Wiring damaged in the door or sill area, especially where it flexes with the door
  • Failed side impact sensor
  • Water in the door or on the floor reaching the sensor connector
  • Restraint control module fault, or its own poor power feed and ground
  • Damage left over from a previous accident or an incomplete airbag repair
  • Aftermarket speaker or alarm wiring routed through the door harness

How to fix it

  1. Read the restraint module and confirm whether the fault is current or stored
  2. Inspect the door and sill harness, flexing the door boot while looking for broken wires
  3. Unplug and inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, moisture and an unlatched lock
  4. Test the sensor circuit for continuity and short to ground back to the restraint module
  5. Find and fix any water leak into the door or footwell before repairing the circuit
  6. Confirm the sensor is bolted to the body at the specified torque
  7. Replace the impact sensor; consider the restraint control module only if the circuit tests good
