Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

What does it mean?

B1380 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Tailgate Closer Unit Neutral Switch Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • The power cinch will not pull the tailgate from half latch to fully closed
  • Tailgate ajar warning stays on even though the gate looks shut
  • Interior lights stay on and the alarm may refuse to arm
  • Power tailgate operation is disabled until the fault clears
  • The tailgate has to be slammed shut by hand

Likely causes

  • Neutral switch inside the closer unit worn or contaminated with old grease and road dirt
  • Cinch lever stuck away from its rest stop so the switch never changes state
  • Water inside the closer unit after a tailgate seal or lamp gasket started to leak
  • Chafed or broken wire between the closer unit and the tailgate control module
  • Corroded connector at the closer unit, which sits low in the tailgate where water collects
  • Closer motor or gearbox binding, holding the mechanism out of neutral
  • Module input fault

How to fix it

  1. Watch the neutral switch state on the scan tool while cycling the latch, using the tool output test if one is available
  2. Inspect the closer unit connector for water, corrosion and pushed-back terminals
  3. Check that the cinch lever returns freely to its rest stop, then clean and relubricate the latch mechanism
  4. Measure the switch circuit at the module connector for an open, a short to ground and a short to power
  5. Flex the harness in the hinge boot while monitoring, since that section takes all the movement
  6. Replace the closer or latch assembly once its internal switch is proven faulty
  7. Re-initialise the power tailgate after the repair if the manufacturer specifies a relearn
