What does it mean?
B1384 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Tailgate Closer Unit Half Latch Switch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- The power cinch never starts, so the tailgate stays resting on its seals and has to be slammed
- Tailgate ajar warning stays on and the interior lamps do not switch off
- No motor sound at all from the closer when the gate is pushed to the first catch
- The alarm may refuse to arm with the gate apparently closed
- Repeated slamming needed to get the gate to stay shut
Likely causes
- Half latch switch inside the latch worn, dirty or corroded
- Tailgate seals stiff or the striker set too high, so the gate rests on the seal without reaching the first catch
- Water inside the latch body after a rear lamp or screen seal leak
- Latch mechanism gummed up with old grease and unable to move to the half latch position
- Broken conductor in the hinge boot section of the tailgate harness
- Corroded latch connector or a terminal pushed back in its housing
- Tailgate control module input fault
How to fix it
- Close the gate slowly by hand while watching the half latch state on the scan tool to see whether it ever changes
- Inspect the striker for wear marks and check its adjustment; a high or worn striker keeps the latch short of the first catch
- Check the tailgate seals for swelling or an added seal that increases closing effort
- Clean and relubricate the latch mechanism, then retest the switch state
- Inspect and dry the latch connector, and check the terminals for corrosion and push-back
- Measure the half latch switch circuit for open and short conditions with the latch unplugged
- Replace the latch or closer assembly if the internal switch is confirmed faulty, then relearn the tailgate if required
