Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

What does it mean?

B1381 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Tailgate Closer Unit Release Switch Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • The tailgate does not power open, because the module never sees the latch release
  • The gate may release mechanically but then be cinched again immediately
  • Ajar warning and interior lamps behave incorrectly
  • The fob or handle command produces a click at the latch but nothing more
  • The tailgate can still be opened by hand once released

Likely causes

  • Release switch inside the closer unit worn out after many cycles
  • Latch pawl sticking with dry or dirty grease so the release position is never reached
  • Water in the latch body corroding the internal switch contacts
  • Broken or chafed wire between the closer unit and the module, usually in the hinge boot
  • Corroded or damp connector at the latch
  • Release actuator weak, so the latch only partly releases
  • Tailgate control module input fault

How to fix it

  1. Command the latch with the scan tool if that function is available, and watch the release switch state change
  2. Listen at the latch during a release attempt to hear whether the actuator moves at all
  3. Inspect the latch connector for water and corrosion, and check the terminals for push-back
  4. Clean and relubricate the latch mechanism so the pawl reaches its full release position
  5. Measure the release switch circuit for an open or a short with the latch unplugged
  6. Flex the hinge boot harness during the test to catch a broken conductor
  7. Replace the closer or latch assembly when the internal switch or actuator is proven faulty, then relearn the tailgate if required
