Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Watch the full latch and half latch states on the scan tool while closing the gate by hand and note which one fails to change

What does it mean?

B1382 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Tailgate Closer Unit Full Latch Switch Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Tailgate ajar warning stays on even with the gate firmly shut
  • Interior lights stay on and the alarm may not arm, which can flatten the battery overnight
  • Power close cycles repeatedly or the cinch keeps trying because the module never sees full latch
  • On some vehicles the vehicle will not allow power tailgate operation at all
  • The gate can be pushed or slammed shut but the warning does not clear

Likely causes

  • Full latch switch inside the latch worn or contaminated so it never closes cleanly
  • Striker out of adjustment or the tailgate seals so firm that the latch cannot reach full latch
  • Water and corrosion inside the latch body after a seal, lamp or screen leak
  • Broken wire in the hinge boot between the latch and the tailgate module
  • Damp or corroded latch connector at the bottom of the tailgate
  • Latch mechanism stiff with old grease, stopping just short of full latch
  • Module input stage fault

How to fix it

  1. Watch the full latch and half latch states on the scan tool while closing the gate by hand and note which one fails to change
  2. Inspect the latch connector for water and corrosion, and dry the tailgate cavity if it is wet
  3. Check striker alignment and the wear marks on it; a badly aligned striker keeps the latch just short of full travel
  4. Clean and relubricate the latch, then close the gate slowly and watch the switch state again
  5. Measure the full latch switch circuit for an open or a short with the latch unplugged
  6. Flex the hinge boot harness while monitoring for dropouts
  7. Replace the latch or closer assembly when the internal switch is proven faulty, then verify the ajar warning clears
