Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

A short to power on a squib circuit is serious, so isolate the system completely before touching anything.

What does it mean?

B1423 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Side-airbag module (RH) (squib) system fault power supply circuit (short-circuited to power supply) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp permanently on and side protection disabled
  • Fault commonly appears after seat heater repair, seat swap or accessory installation
  • Code is current at every start and returns instantly after clearing
  • Other seat related codes such as heating or position memory may set at the same time
  • No effect on engine, brakes or general driveability

Likely causes

  • Yellow squib harness chafed against a seat heater, seat motor or lumbar supply wire routed in the same loom
  • Aftermarket seat heater, phone charger or alarm wiring spliced into the seat harness
  • Water or corrosion in the under seat connector bridging a squib pin to an adjacent live pin
  • Insulation crushed between the seat frame and a powered accessory bracket
  • Internal fault in the side airbag module connecting the initiator to its supply side
  • Damaged repair joint where a previous technician taped several circuits together
  • Restraint control module output stage failure feeding voltage into the circuit

How to fix it

  1. Turn off the ignition, disconnect the battery and observe the specified reserve energy discharge period
  2. Unplug the side airbag module and inspect the connector for corrosion, moisture or a pin pushed across to a live terminal
  3. Trace the seat loom and separate the squib pair from any power carrying wires that share the same tape wrap
  4. Remove or correctly reroute aftermarket wiring spliced into the seat harness before doing anything else
  5. With the module unplugged, check whether supply voltage is present on the squib wires with the ignition on
  6. Repair the damaged insulation or renew the harness section, keeping the squib pair separated and protected
  7. Fit a new side airbag module only if the harness proves clean, then clear the codes and confirm the warning lamp goes out
