Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge time before any work on the restraint system

What does it mean?

B1424 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Side-airbag module (RH) (squib ignition drive circuit) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on and staying on with the side airbag disabled
  • Right side airbag will not deploy even though the module and wiring look untouched
  • Code sets again on the first ignition cycle after being erased
  • May be joined by other restraint codes if the control module itself is at fault
  • Nothing unusual in the way the vehicle starts, runs or brakes

Likely causes

  • Corroded or partly mated connector between the restraint module and the right side squib branch
  • High resistance joint in the firing loop caused by a poor repair splice or a stretched terminal
  • Damaged section of the yellow harness between the module in the centre tunnel and the seat
  • Water reaching the restraint module connector after a leaking windscreen, heater matrix or door membrane
  • Internal failure of the firing driver stage inside the restraint control module
  • Wrong or incompatible airbag module presenting a load the driver cannot verify
  • Low system voltage during the module self test producing a false drive circuit report

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge time before any work on the restraint system
  2. Check the battery and charging system voltage, since a weak supply can make the module fail its own drive circuit test
  3. Unplug and inspect the restraint control module connectors for water, corrosion, bent pins and unlatched locks, then reseat them fully
  4. Follow the yellow harness from the module through the tunnel to the seat, checking for crush damage and poor previous repairs
  5. Substitute the approved load tool for the airbag module and see whether the drive circuit fault clears, which separates harness from module
  6. Repair the harness or connector faults found and retest before ordering any control unit
  7. Replace the restraint control module only when the wiring, the supply and the airbag module have all been proven good, then code it to the vehicle and clear the memory
